Sustainability for Our Planet

Being at the start of the food chain, the planet is central to our business. We depend directly on natural resources and understand that our operations have an environmental impact. That’s why we are focused on measuring our footprint comprehensively, so we can identify opportunities and take meaningful steps towards improving our environmental performance.

  • You can’t change what you don’t measure.
  • We are currently completing a comprehensive measurement of our Scope 1, 2, and 3 carbon emissions. Establishing this critical baseline will allow us to set Science-Based Reduction Targets and create a clear roadmap toward achieving Net Zero.
  • To ensure continuous improvement, we’ve introduced a Sustainability Metric Report that monitors our performance in real time. This helps us track the real impact of our actions, adapt strategies as needed, and plan effectively for both our business and future generations.
  • We also share key insights with our team through the Climate Corner section in our ‘Fresh News’ staff newsletter, fostering awareness and engagement across the company.

We are proud members of LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming), committed to farming responsibly and with care As members of LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming), we are committed to responsible farming that supports the environment. We focus on enhancing biodiversity by supporting four key species on our farms:

  • Barn Owls: Declining due to habitat loss, we’ve installed nesting boxes to provide safe nesting and hunting areas.
  • Yellowhammers: We grow seed crops to provide vital food sources for this vulnerable farmland bird.
  • Irish Hares: We maintain rich pastures and wild bird cover crops, preserving hunting corridors for birds of prey.
  • Bees: Pollinators face many threats; we grow pumpkins to provide rich pollen and introduce over 100 bumblebee and honeybee hives each season to support pollination. These efforts contribute to a thriving farm ecosystem that supports sustainable vegetable production.

In 2016, we installed a wind turbine to generate renewable energy for our site. In 2017, we constructed an Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plant, which supports a circular economy by converting vegetable waste from our packing facilities into green energy. The energy produced powers our packing operations, with any surplus fed back into the local grid.
